Learn the words to use when eating and drinking in Japanese

Some phrases that are commonly used when eating in Japanese include:

  1. いただきます (Itadakimasu) – Before eating (lit. “I humbly receive”)
  2. ごちそうさまでした (Gochisou sama deshita) – After eating (lit. “It was a feast”)
  3. おかわりいただけますか (Okawari itadakemasu ka) – Can I have a refill?
  4. おいしいですね (Oishii desu ne) – This is delicious
  5. こちらこそ、おいしい料理を作ってくださりありがとうございます (Kochira koso, oishii ryori wo tsukutte kudasari arigatou gozaimasu) – Thank you for making such a delicious meal
  6. 一杯いただけますか (Ippai itadakemasu ka) – May I have a full serving?
  7. お茶をお入れしましょうか (Ocha wo oire shimashou ka) – Would you like some tea?
  8. ご馳走様でした (Gochisou sama deshita) – It was a feast (more formal than the phrase above)
  9. 美味しい料理を作ってくださり、本当にありがとうございました (Oishii ryori wo tsukutte kudasari, hontou ni arigatou gozaimashita) – Thank you very much for making such a delicious meal (very formal)
  10. この料理はとても美味しいです (Kono ryori wa totemo oishii desu) – This dish is very delicious.
